From Under the Blanket Series
A series of paintings originally made especially for exhibtion at the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital. Although the series was designed to be viewed sequentially, each one is also intended to hold its own as an individual painting.
During three lengthy spells in the Hospital, I was able to get a ‘feel’ for its life and rhythm. Walking the corridors habitually I found strategies to cope with such a long stay. In the ward, snippets of briefly glimpsed lives made a patina of shared experience.
When confined to one space, especially in hospital notions of the public and private dissolve. Moods swing wildly according to the prognosis of the day. In retrospect it was an enriching time, and in making the pieces I have touched on themes of nurture, growth and healing - from literally “under the blanket”.
